Mathematics Courses


MTH 030 Pre-Algebra Bridge

A free course intended for students who placed into MTH 070. The Pre-Algebra Bridge is designed to assist in improving placement scores by focusing on college study skills, test taking skills, and key mathematical concepts. Topics include whole numbers, integers, fractions, decimals, percents, ratios, and proportions. At the end of the Bridge program, you will retake the placement exam and have the opportunity to place higher.

MTH 040 Fundamental Concepts in Mathematics Bridge

A free course intended for students who placed into MTH 080 or MTH 094.The Fundamental Concepts in Mathematics Bridge is designed to assist in improving placement scores by focusing on college study skills, test taking skills, and key mathematical concepts. Topics include solving linear and absolute value equations and inequalities graphing on the Cartesian Coordinate system, slope and equations of lines, graphing linear inequalities, solving systems of equations with graphing, rules of exponents, and multiplication/division of polynomials. MTH 040 utilizes a departmental workbook and a computer learning management system. At the end of the Bridge program, you will retake the placement exam and have the opportunity to place higher.

MTH 070 Pre-Algebra
Prerequisite: None

Pre-Algebra is an entry-level course for students in preparation for the Introductory/Intermediate algebra sequence or Fundamental Concepts in Math. Topics to be covered include: arithmetic operations on the set of whole numbers, integers, and rational numbers, including decimals, exponents, and percents, solving linear equations, various applications in problem-solving, the coordinate system, and basic graphing.Ìý Placement in Pre-Algebra is determined by a student's score on the math placement test and/or the student's mathematical background. When successfully completed (grade C or better), the course satisfies the college's prerequisite for
Introductory Algebra, Fundamental Concepts in Math, and Business Mathematics. Prerequisite: None

MTH 075 Introduction to College Math

A developmental mathematics course designed to prepare students for a variety of coursework in college level mathematics. Students will expand their backgrounds in arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and mathematical reasoning. Topics to be covered include arithmetic operations and properties, unit analysis, algebraic expressions, linear equations and inequalities, graphing, and applications involving linear equations, area, perimeter, rate, ratio, and percents.

MTH 081 Support for Intermediate Algebra
Prerequisite: MTH 075ÌýMinimum grade C.

This course is for students who wish to take Intermediate Algebra but do not have the appropriate placement. This course will focus on building skills needed for Intermediate Algebra through just-in-time remediation, study skills, and additional opportunities for active learning with the content of Intermediate Algebra.Ìý

MTH 084 Support for Contemporary Math
Prerequisite: MTH 075ÌýMinimum grade C.

This course is for students who wish to takeÌýContemporary Math but do not have theÌýappropriate placement. This course will focus onÌýbuilding skills needed for Contemporary MathÌýthrough just-in-time remediation, study skills,Ìýadditional opportunities for active learning withÌýthe content of Contemporary Math.Ìý

MTH 085 Support for Statistics
Prerequisite: MTH 075ÌýMinimum grade C

This course is for students who wish to take StatisticsÌýbut do not have the appropriate placement. This course will focus on building skills needed for StatisticsÌýthrough just-in-time remediation, study skills, and additional opportunities for active learning with the content of Statistics.Ìý

MTH 094 Fundamental Concepts in Mathematics
Prerequisite: MTH 070Ìýor appropriate math placement; minimum grade C

A developmental mathematics course designed to prepare students for coursework in college level mathematics. Students will gain a background in algebra, geometry, and mathematical reasoning.Ìý Topics to be covered include introductions to linear equations, the Cartesian coordinate system, statistics, geometry, functions, unit analysis, andÌýmathematicalÌýreasoning.Ìý Application based problems and learning will be infused throughout the course.ÌýNot intended for transfer.

MTH 102 Business Mathematics
Prerequisite: Minimum grade of CÌýin MTH 075ÌýorÌýMTH 094ÌýORÌýappropriate math placement.

A course exploring the applications of mathematics and statistics to business and finance. Topics include, discounts, markups and markdowns, unit cost, earnings, income tax, organizing data with graphs and charts, measures of center and variation, present and future value using both simple and compound interest, depreciation, and inflation. Please note that this is intended as a terminal course; completion of this course would not qualify students for higher level mathematics.

MTH 108 Technical Mathematics
Prerequisite: Minimum grade or CÌýinÌýMTH 075Ìý orÌýÌýMTH 094ÌýORÌýappropriate math placement.

A course exploring the applications of mathematics to technical and industrial applications. Topics include applications of algebraic functions including linear and quadratic equations, geometric reasoning, (congruence, similarity, area, volume, etc.) trigonometry (angles, ratios of right angles, Law of Sines and Cosines), and statistics (measures of center and dispersion, probability, and graphs). Please note that this is intended as a terminal course; completion of this course would not qualify students for higher level mathematics.

MTH 110 Intermediate Algebra
Prerequisite: Minimum grade of CÌýinÌýMTH 094ÌýOR

Intermediate Algebra is designed to prepare students for College Algebra. Topics covered include: systems of linear equations and inequalities, absolute value equations and inequalities, polynomial operations, factoring (including sum and difference of cubes), solving quadratics using factoring and the quadratic formula,Ìýgraphing quadratic equations, rational expressions and equations, and radical expressions and equations.

MTH 134 Math for Fine and Performing Arts
Prerequisite: Minimum grade of "C" inÌýMTH 075ÌýÌýor MTH 094, OR appropriate math placement.

This course is designed to explore applications of mathematics specific to visual art, design, music, and the theatre. Topics include ratios and perspective, 2D and 3D geometry, harmonic intervals, tiling, fractals, and infographics. Please note that this is intended as a terminal course; completion of this course will not qualify students for higher level mathematics.

MTH 140 Contemporary Mathematics
Prerequisite: Minimum grade of C in MTH 094ÌýOR

Contemporary Mathematics provides students with a broad survey of topics in mathematics. Students learn problem solving strategies and reasoning, with topics in algebraic modeling, finance, voting methods, probability, statistics, and geometry.

MTH 150 Statistics
Prerequisite: Minimum grade of "C" inÌýMTH-094Ìý OR

Statistics is an introductory course for students whose college and career paths require knowledge of the fundamentals of the collections, analysis, and interpretation of data. Topics include the presentation of interpretation of univariate and bivariate data using graphical and numerical methods, probability, discrete and continuous probability distributions, linear regression, an understanding of good practice in study design, statistical inference, confidence intervals, and hypothesis testing. Emphasis is placed on the development of statistical thinking, simulations and the use of technology.

MTH 170 College Algebra
Prerequisite: Prerequisite: Minimum grade of C inÌýMTH 110Ìýor appropriate placement score.

College Algebra (Precalculus A) is the first of two courses intended to prepare students for fields of study that would require a high level of algebraic reasoning or Calculus. Topics include the foundational principles of functions, the analysis of functions, and algebraic reasoning. This is a STEM path course.

MTH 171 Trigonometry
Prerequisite: Minimum grade of C in MTH 170Ìýor appropriate placement to enterÌýMTH 171.

Trigonometry is the second of two courses intended to prepare students for fields that require a high level of algebraic reasoning or Calculus. This course includes the trigonometry component of a precalculus course. Topics include geometric reasoning and trigonometry.

MTH 180 Survey Calculus
Prerequisite: Minimum grade of 'C' inÌýMTH 170Ìýor appropriate math placement score.

Survey Calculus is an introductory study of the techniques of differential and integral calculus. The focus of the course will be on functions and the applications of the calculus to the life, social, and managerial sciences, with particular emphasis on business applications. Trigonometry is not used.

MTH 190 Analytic Geometry & Calculus I
Prerequisite: Minimum grade of "C" in MTH 170Ìý and MTH 171Ìý or appropriate math placement score.

A first course in a sequence of courses including analytic geometry, differential calculus, and integral calculus. This series is recommended for majors in engineering, the physical sciences, and mathematics. Topics include: properties of real numbers, introduction to analytic geometry, functions, limits, continuity, the derivative, differentiation of functions, applications of the derivative, antiderivatives, and the definite integral.

MTH 210 Analytic Geometry & Calculus II
Prerequisite: Minimum grade of "C" in MTH 190. Students earning Calculus I credit through transfer or AP exam are required a satisfactory score on the Trigonometry placement exam.

A continuation of MT 1605 including the following topics: applications of the definite integral, logarithmic and exponential functions, hyperbolic and trigonometric functions, techniques of integration, approximate integration, indeterminate forms, improper integrals, polar coordinates, conic sections, vectors, parametric equations, sequences, and series.

MTH 220 Analytic Geometry & Calculus III
Prerequisite: Minimum grade of 'C' in MTH 210.

A continuation of MTH 210Ìýincluding the following topics: vectors and surfaces in three-dimensional space, solid analytic geometry, differential calculus of functions of several variables, and multiple integration.

MTH 241 Linear Algebra
Prerequisite: Minimum grade of 'C' in MTH 210.

Topics studied in this course will include systems of linear equations, matrices, vector and vector spaces, inner products, linear transformations, determinants, eigenvalues and eigenvectors.

MTH 242 Engineering Statistics
Prerequisite: Minimum grade of "C" in MTH 210.

An introduction to statistical methods in engineering and the physical sciences dealing with basic probability, distribution theory, confidence intervals, significance tests, and sampling.

MTH 245 Differential Equations
Prerequisite: Minimum grade of "C" in MTH 220.

A study of separable variables, homogeneous equations, exact equations, integrating factors, linear differential equations, LaPlace transform, and applications.

MTH 270 I.S.-Mathematics
Prerequisite: Consent of instructor

A specialized program of study directly related to the department's area of expertise. The course is arranged between a faculty member and student and takes into consideration the needs, interests and background of the student.

MTH 280 Special Topics-Mathematics
Prerequisite: None

Courses are offered to accommodate special interests of students and/or faculty. Typically, the course will cover new material not currently contained in the curriculum at 91ԭƬ.
